Movie Night: LONG DISTANCE SWIMMER - SARA MARDINI
The documentary begins when the fictionalized drama ends. Sara spent three years volunteering to save refugees on the same journey that made her so famous, and was suddenly arrested in Aug. 2018, accused by Greek authorities of running a criminal enterprise with charges including “international espionage and people smuggling.” If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison and the end of her humanitarian career. Shot over three years, the film follows Sara’s fight for justice and journey of self-discovery.
Director's Biography
Charly W. FELDMAN: Born in Canada, raised in Vietnam, and currently based in London UK, Charly Wai Feldman discovered her passion for filmmaking while studying at McGill University. She has a background in current affairs, and has made films in over 20 countries around themes of identity and migration, from women trafficking in Vietnam to the Great Green Wall in Africa. Her films have been broadcast on around the world and featured at IDFA, Karlovy Vary, and Raindance. Charly is the recipient of the 2020 Malik Bendjelloul Memorial Fund and a member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia. LONG DISTANCE SWIMMER: SARA MARDINI is her feature film directorial debut.
