ACB GUIDED VISIT OF THE

WIERTZ MUSEUM

Sunday, 20 November  2022 at 11.30-12.30pm

Join us for a unique guided visit of the Wiertz Museum! On Sunday morning 11.30am, November 20th, the Museum, which is closed to the public, will be especially opened for a unique guided visit in English for the ACB.

The Wiertz Museum is located in the former residence and studio of the artist Antoine Wiertz. Between romanticism and fear inducing scenes, immerse yourself in the whirlwind that is the universe of this Belgian painter, sculptor and thinker.

The Wiertz has preserved its original atmosphere, is dedicated to painter, sculptor and writer Antoine Wiertz (1806-1865), a somewhat controversial artistic figure of the Belgian Romantic movement. Wiertz loved the spectacular, painting giant canvasses to indulge his thirst for the excessive, like the more than 8 metres long "Greeks and Trojans fighting over the body of Patroclus". His most famous painting is probably "Two Girls" ("La Belle Rosine"), in which a young woman faces a skeleton, reflecting the artist's fascination with death and the fragility of human life.

The Wiertz Museum is surrounded by the Citizens' Garden, which used to be Antoine Wiertz's garden. Both the Museum and the Garden have been recently renovated by the European Parliament and opened to the public for the first time in September 2020. The garden features Sculptures of historic European philosophers and artists and is a green oasis of calm at the heart of the European Quarter.

For a preview of the Citizens' Garden and the Wiertz Museum have a look at the video here: https://youtu.be/tBh6cm9fW9o

After the tour, those who wish can join us for lunch in a nearby restaurant.
