Jeanine CUMMINS , born in Spain is an American author who has written three other books : a memoir titled A Rip in Heaven and three novels, The Outside Boy, The Crooked Branch.  She identifies as both white and Latina.  Her grandmother was born and raised in Puerto Rico.  Her father Gene was stationed as a member of the U.S. Navy.  Her mother Kay, was a nurse.  Her husband is from Ireland and was an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. for 10 years ...

“AMERICAN DIRT” is the third novel by American writer Jeanine Cummins. It  is set in Mexico and opens with the ghastly massacre of the heroine Lydia’s entire family except

for herself and her 8 year old son Luca, in Acapulco. The killing was by a leading  and very violent drug  cartel “Los Jardineros”. Lydia, a book shop owner had  became unwittingly involved with the leader of Los Jardineros, and was subsequently obliged in fear of their lives,  to flee with Luca and head north to the USA to escape. The suspenseful story tells of her terrifying journey. It an Oprah Winfrey” pick of the month”  and has been highly successful, although criticised by some for not being authentic enough about real migrants’ experiences.”

Once a month,  you are invited to join our evening Reading Group get-together, to discuss the book-of-the-month, which is written by an American or Canadian author.  We meet in the Brussels area, on the second Wednesday of the month, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

We often share a meal together while sharing views on the book-of-the-month!  And also, info about good reads we have enjoyed.  All contributions to the conversation are welcome!
