FAWCO - Overview of FGM in the US

Sahiyo was established in 2015 when 5 women came together to speak out about the practice of FGM (khatna) in the Bohra community. From this meeting grew a group who is now regarded as one of the leading organizations in the fight against FGM. Sahiyo was very visible during the recent CSW65 meeting. Named one of six experts to watch on the issue of female genital cutting (FGC) by News Deeply, Mariya has worked in gender-based violence for over a decade in the areas of teaching, research, policy, program development, and direct service.

During the session, a deeper insight into the situation in the US, the gaps in legislation and the challenge in managing these gaps will be addressed, as well as the power of storytelling.
