A very warm “Hello” to all our dear AWCB members,
It’s wonderful to sit down and come to chat with you, giving you news from the past and upcoming news.
Let's start with the annual FAWCO meeting which took place this year in Annapolis, MD on March 27th-30th. So many lovely people to meet and ideas to share. This year, the “new” idea is to try sisterhood with other clubs in Europe. Would we, from Brussels, be open to meet clubs in Germany or the Netherlands or any other country throughout the world? How could we do that? It would of course be meetings by zoom, we are not all going to fly to Berlin or Morocco, of course! Please think about it and come up with ideas. For example, would we like to share well known recipes or a book we loved? Sisterhood is a way of opening our minds, making new friends, it’s a step towards peace.
Coming up are so many major events that I’ll start chronologically.
o Karen Northshield was in Zaventem when the bombs exploded. She woke up after 40 days, stayed in hospitals for four years and underwent more than fifty surgeries. She now gives talks on the way she finally renewed her life.
o Claire Oppert is a French American cellist. Among other activities, she’s an art therapist, who has used her music for over 20 years to help persons, such as children with autism, people with neurodegenerative diseases, and palliative care patients. playing her cello in hospital rooms on a one-to-one basis. She will tell us all about her experiences but will also beautifully play her cello.
So, dear members, so many things coming up, our club is so active, and you are part of that activity!! Thank you all for your interest and many, many times your help. So nice to know that we have lovely members in our club.

The AWCB is all about you, our wonderful members. The Club is no more than the totality of us together and what we make it. Like all organisations, we need a good team of volunteers who can handle the organisation of activities, pay the bills and generally make things run. New blood into any management team is vital to keep us fresh, especially after 75 years.
Do you feel you can contribute and help run our beloved Club? Can you contribute a few hours a week to publish newsletters, organise events, handle social media posts or any one of the other multiple tasks that it takes to run a Club? Then come forward and lets harness your enthusiasm and expertise. At the AGM 3rd June, we will vote in a new Board; if you think you can help, please contact the Secretary via email on chris@awcb.org
Relay For Life Saturday 31st May & Sunday 1st June

Relay for Life is nearly with us! Spring weather is always unpredictable, but this past weekend has energized my ambition for getting outside and moving! In 5 weeks, Relay for Life will be up and running for 24 hours at the Pachy Stadium in Waterloo.
For the second year, the AWCB will be running a team and a tent to raise funds. We NEED at least 17 volunteers on the day itself, either to take part in the walking and/or to help staff our tent to sell items.
If you are willing to attend and assist, please contact me directly telling me what date and times you can volunteer. You will also need to register as a teammate on this link; when registering please do remember to register as part of the AWCB team.
Even if you cannot attend on these days (and even if you can!), there are many other ways you can help us to raise funds. Mainly we need your cooking skills (hint, try cooking this month's recipe!). We need friends to roll up their sleeves and bake products for us to sell; then of course we need you to drop them off before the event. Help us to entice people to stock up their pantries by buying our wonderful cakes and breads!

If you would like to contribute food, please contact me directly to inform of what you will bring.
We will also be selling Key Fobs this year; would you like to help us make some before the event? Contact me and we will arrange a ‘key fob making session’.
Last year, at short notice the AWCB raised an outstanding 300 euros. This year, we aim to beat that figure so come on AWCB team, contact me and help out!

A new Group is being formed within the AWCB; the AWCB Walking Club! Fancy exploring new areas on foot with friends from within the Club? The AWCB Walking Group aims to set up a different walk at least once a month in new locations and is looking both for members to join and members to host a walk.
Do you have a favourite walk you would like to share with your friends? Come and join us! See the invitation to the new WhatsApp Group posted in AWCB Event Announcements, or alternatively contact events@awcb.org and we will enroll you. And of course watch the events page, where the monthly walks will be advertised.
Sale of Club Storage Items
\n\nSince the sale of the old Clubhouse in 2020, the Club has stored many items in a storage facility. The Board recently visited the facility and reviewed the contents, none of which are currently usable. The storage costs the Club nearly 2,000 euros a year, equivalent to the membership fee of 20 members and is the second largest budget item in the cost of running the Club. Indeed the Club has, over the last 5 years, spent as much on storage as the value of the items being stored.
\n\nThe Board has therefore made the difficult but right decision to dispose of the remaining items and to close the storage facility. To this end, a list of the items in storage is attached. Some items will be retained at the homes of the Directors (for free), but the majority has to be disposed of.
The Board wishes that the Members and Charities of the Club get the benefit of these items. We are therefore holding a sale of these items only open to Club members. The list of the items to be sold will be sent in a separate email, along with the requested price. If you wish to purchase any of these items, please send a mail to the Secretary chris@awcb.org Items will be sold on a ‘first come, first served basis’, with the funds being paid to the Clubs bank account on confirmation of order.
Note! If you wish to bid a lower price, please send an email to the Secretary, who will hold your bid until 14th June 2025. At that point the highest bid per item will be automatically accepted if nobody has purchased at full price.
\nCollection is mandatory on Saturday 21st June 2025, between 10am and 3pm. All items NOT sold prior to Saturday 21st June will be offered at ANY price to Members who come in person on 21st June (all items must be taken away the same day). At 3pm on 21st June, the charities supported by the Club are invited to come and help themselves for free to any item not disposed of to the Members. Please note that, due to the way these items were stored, we are unable to access and take photos of individual items.In this way, we hope that the remaining items from the Club House can find a happy and useful home, either with you our Members or at least by being put to good use by our Charities. \n\nAmerican Groceries Europe, one of the Club Sponsors, has recently moved its store to a larger location in Overijse. As part of the move, AGE has set up a social area within the store located at Gebroeders Danhieuxstraat 5, 3090 Overijse and is delighted to now offer this room to Groups in the AWCB for use as a social room at no charge. Want to set up a Bridge Group or another Group within the AWCB? Now we have a permanent location so to do! All events must be official AWCB events and published in the Events Calendar. If you would like to hold an event, please contact either events@awcb.org or admin@americangroceriesbelgium.be for more details.

AWCB does Paris - 26th to 28th September
One or two nights in Paris; historical walk exploring the connections between 18th century France and the (then) new USA Republic, followed by dinner in the Eiffel Tower. Sunday is luxury day, with the Dior Museum followed by the Musee Jacquemart Andre and a high tea. Hotel is the delightful Hotel Design Sorbonne, with the opportunity for aFriday night walking tour by Florence (a resident for 25 years) and a local 3 course dinner. A trip not to be missed! Limited to 16 people, first come first served!
FAWCO Region 4 Conference, Novotel, Brussels - 14th to 16th November
The AWCB shall be hosting the Region 4 Conference this year at the Novotel Hotel in Brussels. The theme is ‘Renewal’, as well as the FAWCO theme of ‘Sisterhood’. Events start the Friday evening with a Dinner at the Roy d’espagne on the Grand Place. The Saturday will be filled with speakers and networking opportunities, with a Gala Dinner and Silent Auction to raise money for our charities in the evening. Sunday will start with a Brussels Walking Tour, followed by an (optional) lunch. Join us for a fun and thought provoking weekend and meet members of other Region 4 FAWCO Clubs.
Recipe Corner - What's cooking today?
\n\nAmerican Belgian Chocolate Cookie Muffins
\n\nMelt the chocolate and butter together over a low heat, then set aside to cool. Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Combine the sugar, eggs and vanilla in a large mixing bowl, beating well until blended. Add the dry ingredients and the chocolate mixture and beat until the batter is smooth. If you want also for the chocolate pieces (surely you did!), add them also now.
Spoon the batter into a greased (Crisco is the best) muffin tray or paper muffin cups (large) and bake in a pre-heated over on 350F/175C over for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Then place to one side to cool, keep half for yourself and give the other half to Melita for the Relay for Life Event!

Friday 14th November to Sunday 16th November 2025
The AWCB is proud to announce that it will host the 2025 Region 4 FAWCO Conference in Brussels, Belgium. Clubs from throughout Region 4, plus senior members of FAWCO globally, will meet for two days of interesting talks, networking events, best practice sharing and several exciting social events.
AWCB MEMBERS are able to attend either some or all the event; further we need a LOT of volunteers to help organise!
The event will start with dinner Friday evening at Le Roy d'Espagne, overlooking the Grand Place in Brussels. Saturday will be full of interesting events and speakers, on topics ranging from Brussels history and architecture, through FAWCO guest speakers, a chance to get to know members from others Clubs and a special event on Women's Rights in the EU! A gala dinner the Saturday night will be followed Sunday morning by a guided tour of Brussels from an expert Architect, rounding off a full weekend of exciting activities.
