Humanitarian Outreach Program and Events
HOPE’s Mission : To make a tangible difference in the lives of the charitable organizations we support, while offering AWCB members meaningful volunteer opportunities in the local community.
Over the years, HOPE has established a legacy of philanthropy in our host country. None of it could have been down without the generous AWCB members, especially those who took the time to volunteer as HOPE angels.
Our main supported charities are:
Alsemberg Refugee Center Provides shelter to men, women and children of various nationalities who seek refuge in Belgium.(Operated by the Red Cross)
Home Leopold: Houses needy elderly Belgians, many of whom have been homeless or suffer from mental illness.
Battered Women’s Shelter: Furnishes temporary housing and counseling to women and their children escaping abusive domestic situations.
What do HOPE volunteers do?
-
Visit residents at Home Leopold during the scheduled one day a month visits lasting 1.5 hours;
-
Plan and/or attend seasonal parties for Refugee Center and Battered Women’s Shelter (2 hours per party);
-
Bake cookies or provide supplies for any of the above scheduled activities; and/or
-
Provide gifts for the needy during our “Angel Tree” activity in November each year.
How can I get involved?
Looking for a way to participate in a variety of projects that touch both individual residents and the Belgian community as a whole without committing to weekly or monthly activities?
Why not consider volunteering for one of HOPE’s “done in a day” projects?
Each project lasts between 1.5 – 2 hours.
Most everyone can find a spare hour or two in her busy schedule to give something back to those less fortunate.
Scheduled future events include:
Please support our two big events:
Starting 5 November, the Angel Tree is the perfect way for you and your family to help less fortunate children this holiday season. Simply choose a child’s profile off the angel tree and purchase an age & gender appropriate gift. Gift purchases should be limited to 20€. You may also donate money. All gifts must be returned to the Club by Wednesday 28 November.
Proceeds raised by the Holiday Bazaar’s Charity Tombola are distributed through community grants to various Belgian charities. The more tickets you purchase, the more support we can give! Tombola drawing on Sunday, 18 November at St. John’s International School.
